Rain and hail, answered

A house roof does not sound like a tin shed.

That loud sound people remember comes from panels screwed to open purlins on a barn. On a house, panels sit over solid plywood, synthetic underlayment, and attic insulation. With the window shut, most people cannot tell rain on metal from rain on shingles.

Come sit under it while it rains.

We built a 12 by 14 foot test room in the shop, under standing seam with decking, underlayment, attic insulation, and a sprinkler bar on the roof. Stop in on a weekday, sit down, and we will turn the rain on.

Hail is louder than shingles while it is coming down. It is also usually over in a few minutes.

Class 4 panels on every house.

Class 4 is the highest impact rating in UL 2218 testing. In plain words, a sample of the panel is hit twice in the same spot with a 2-inch steel ball dropped from 20 feet. It must not crack or split.

Very large hail can still leave small cosmetic dents, but those dents do not cause leaks.

Several of our customers got a lower premium after telling their insurance agent about the Class 4 panels, so ask your agent.

Built to take a harder hit

Strong steel. Straight answers.

We use 24-gauge, Class 4 impact-rated panels on every house roof. That is not a promise that weather never leaves a mark. It is a stronger panel built for the storms we get here.

“Two hailstorms since. Not a mark on the house roof. The cheap panels on the shed dented, which is exactly what Tyler said would happen.”Ron B., Box Elder

Frequently asked questions

Can a metal roof get hail dents?

Yes. Very large hail can leave cosmetic dents, even on a strong panel. A cosmetic dent does not mean the roof leaks.

Does Class 4 mean the roof cannot dent?

No. It means the panel passed a strict impact test without cracking or splitting. Very large hail can still leave a cosmetic dent.

Why is the old barn roof so loud?

Most old barn roofs are panels over open framing with nothing underneath. A house roof has a solid deck, synthetic underlayment, and attic insulation separating the panel from the room below.
